Triple Award: B or above in Biology and Chemistry GCSE

Double Award: B or above in Science and Additional Science GCSE

Maths: B or above

English Language: B or above

There is a new specification starting from September 2015. The numeracy and literacy demands of the course are increasing significantly.

Brief Outline of the Course:

AS (2 Units)

Unit Title: Weighting (%)


Basic Biochemistry and Cell Organisation 20 Written paper – 1 hour 30 minutes
Biodiversity and Physiology of Body Systems 20 Written paper – 1 hour 30 minutes

 A Level (The above plus a further 3 units)

Unit Title: Weighting (%)


Energy, Homeostasis and the Environment 25 Written paper – 2 hours
Variation, Inheritance and Options 25 Written paper – 2 hours
Practical Examination 10

All theory exam papers consist of a range of short and longer structured question, some in a practical context and one essay.

The Biology AS and A Level course aims to:

  • Provide a broad factual base and stimulate an interest in the subject
  • Promote an investigatory approach and understanding of scientific methods
  • Provide a critical appreciation of wider issues arising from the subject.

For Example:

Human Genome Project, gene therapy, genetic engineering, DNA fingerprinting, Greenhouse Effect, agricultural exploitation, pest control, disease and disease control, vaccination programmes, overuse of antibiotics, evolution and natural selection, cloning and the effects of drugs

Career Opportunities/Additional Information

Very important for Medicine, Dentistry and allied fields. Career opportunities exist in many areas such as the Food Industry, Sports Science, Environmental Health and obviously forms a base for many science based degrees courses.
