This course is intended for those who wish to pursue a career within the early years/childcare sector. Award students will study 2 core and 2 optional units. Certificate students will study 2 core, 2 mandatory and 3 optional units.
|1 Core||Patterns of Child Development this unit reflects the importance of child
Development for the age range, of birth up to eight years.
|2 Core||Promoting Children’s Development through play this unit looks at the importance of play as a route of children’s learning, which also forms the basis of early years frameworks, such as the Early Years Foundation Phase.||Internal|
|3 Mandatory||The Principles of Early Years Practice ensures learners appreciate the importance of inclusive practice and the key person approach within the early years sector.||External|
|4 Mandatory||Promoting Children’s Positive Behaviour students need to understand how to promote and support children’s positive behaviour||Internal|
|5||Health & Safety in Early Years Settings introduces learners to the important health and safety practices used within early years, to ensure the safety of children.||Internal|
|6||Supporting children’s Language and Literacy Development introduces learners to ways of supporting children’s language and literacy development, which reflects the increasing importance of literacy skills.||Internal|
|7||Making Healthy Food Choices for Children explores the basic nutritional and dietary needs of children from birth up to eight years, reflecting the importance of nutrition for children as it affects their growth and development.||Internal|
|8||Introduction to Working in the Early Years Sector introduces learners to roles and responsibilities in different types of early years settings to help inform future career planning.||Internal|
The externally assessed units consist of 1 hour paper based exams that are set and marked by Edexcel.
Requirement/skills for acceptance onto the course: 4 GCSE’s/BTEC level 1 qualification. Students should be willing to participate in a range of activities and work placements.
Career Opportunities – progression to level 3, employment in nurseries or early years settings.
