Pupils must follow a compulsory component in Pure Mathematics plus one of two optional components, Mechanics or Statistics.
Assessment is 100% examination. The AS course involves 3 examinations, each of 1.5 hours. The A LEVEL course involves a further 3 examinations of 1.5 hours (i.e. A full ‘A’ level consists of 6 examinations).

|C2 – Pure||Series, Logarithms, geometry of the circle, radian measure, trigonometric functions and integration|
|EITHER M1 Mechanics||Equations of motion, Newton’s Laws, friction movement and impulse, moments, centre of mass, resolution of forces and equilibrium.|
|OR S1 Statistics||Probability and distribution theory.|
A LEVEL Modules
|C3 – Pure||Trigonometric equations, functions, e and In x, differentiation, integration and roots of equations|
|C4 – Pure||Binomial series, trigonometric equations, Cartesian & parametric equations, differential equations, integration and vectors.|
|EITHER M2 Mechanics||Rectilinear motion, dynamics, motion under gravity, vectors, circular motion.|
|OR S2 Statistics||Uniform distribution, normal distribution, hypothesis testing, and confidence limits|
To study mathematics at ‘A’ level, students must have gained a good mathematics grade at GCSE. They must possess good study skills and have a genuine commitment to the subject.
Mathematics provides a sound basis for many occupations as well as an entry subject for higher / further education.
